What were the tasks?

World Water Day 2011 put a strong emphasis on teambuilding and motivating the participants. In order to achieve this aim, the event was hosted as a two-day expedition where different teams competed with each other. The expedition included elements of acclimatization as the volunteers camped in a field in the middle of the slum. The volunteers were directly exposed to the problems of the slum and challenged to identify themselves with the people who live there permanently. An important aim was to encourage contact between the volunteers and the community members, to challenge existing social barriers. Moreover, the event as a whole was meant to carry out the message to the community that 'we are here to serve them'. Simultaneously, the event encouraged our volunteers to step outside their comfort zone and show them of the urgency of social action.

Challenge 1 : Clean the lake

For three and a half hours, the teams were occupied with cleaning the lake and the sides of the lake. The volunteer teams needed to sort out how to run the task efficiently as it was the first test of their ability to function as a team. Every team needed to collect as much hard trash as possible and were provided with several tools such as: boats, nets etc. to do so. After collecting the trash in bags, the garbage will be transported to a place where it can be picked up by the city cleaning force, as this cleaning force is not active in the slum itself. Also, the trash was weighed in order to find out which team collected the most. The teams were awarded points for their performance, and the team to collect the most trash in weight, won.

Challenge 2 : Find the tent challenge

After the first challenge, the teams were given time to shower and freshen up before lunch. Then, after lunch their tents were locked for the next challenge.

Each team was given map that marked where water pots were hidden inside various structures in the slums. Each team had to find the rickshaw garage or house which was marked by their team color. Then, they had to collect the water pot from that building and fill it with water. They then had take it to a certain house. The water pots contained clues which specified where the water pots were to be taken.

After they deposited the water-filled pots to the designated house, they were directed to go to the docks. On reaching the docks, they collected the keys to their tents and were told to return to the base. The first team to arrive won.

Challenge 3 : Master Chef Korail

The first task of the second day was the cook-off. After the teams freshened up and had a light breakfast, each team was allocated cooking utensils and raw food materials. Each team prepared a common menu from the provided food materials. over wooden stoves.

The teams were judged on the quality of the food, the quantity of the food and the presentation.

Challenge 4 : the great boat race

The last task of the event was the boat race. Each team had to select four of its most able members to would row from one side of the river to the other. Each boat was accompanied by one diver and one boats-man, who would row the boat back in case the team failed, as well as the team's moderator.
